Connect Estimay to Claude and other AI assistants: the MCP setup guide

Estimay's MCP server lets an AI assistant set up planning poker rooms, add stories, read a room and record the agreed estimates, as you. Connecting it takes about a minute in any assistant that speaks the Model Context Protocol, with no API key and no account. Here is the setup for each client, what the consent screen does, and how to disconnect.

Before you start

  • The server's address is https://estimay.io/api/mcp. That is all any client needs.
  • Use the browser you plan in. The assistant will act as the guest of the browser where you allow it, the one that hosts your rooms.
  • Nothing to pay. The MCP server is free today and needs no account, so any team can connect.

The 60-second setup

  1. Add the server's address to your assistant (per client below).
  2. Allow it in your browser. The first time the assistant uses an Estimay tool, your browser opens Estimay's consent page. Check the assistant's name and choose Allow.
  3. Choose what it may do:Read & write to create rooms and record estimates, or Read only to let it look at your rooms and change nothing.

Setup by client

Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)

Open Settings → Connectors, choose Add custom connector, name it Estimay and paste the address. Then choose Connect on it to allow it in your browser. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner may need to add the connector for the organisation first. A connector added on claude.ai is available in Claude Desktop too.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http estimay https://estimay.io/api/mcp

Add --scope user to have it in every project. In a session, type /mcp, pick storyvote and authenticate. More in running planning poker from Claude Code.

Cursor

Add it to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in one project), then sign in from Cursor's MCP settings when it asks:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "estimay": {
      "url": "https://estimay.io/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code

Run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette, choose HTTP and paste the address. VS Code opens the browser to allow it when a tool is first used.

ChatGPT and other clients

Any client that connects to remote MCP servers over HTTP with OAuth works the same way: give it the address, and allow it in your browser. In ChatGPT, custom connectors depend on your plan and your workspace's settings.

What the consent screen does

Estimay has no accounts, so the consent screen doesn't ask for a password. It shows which assistant is asking and where it will return, and asks for your name if this browser hasn't used Estimay yet. When you allow it, the assistant gets a token that acts as this browser's guest: the same identity that hosts the rooms you create here. That is why a room the assistant creates opens with you as its host.

Each browser is its own guest. If you connect from your work laptop, rooms the assistant creates are yours in that browser, not on your phone. Connect again from another browser if you switch.

What the assistant can do

  • Read (both levels): the rooms you are in, as you would see them, and their results as a table or CSV.
  • Write (Read & write only): create and join rooms, add, edit and delete stories, start a vote, reveal, vote again, vote with the card you name, run the discussion timer, change the cards, make someone a facilitator, set estimates, write them back to the room's tracker, and end the room.

It also offers three ready-made prompts, plan_sprint, refine_stories and record_outcome, which most clients show as commands.

The room's own rules still apply: only the host and facilitators add stories or set estimates, and nobody, assistant included, sees a card before the reveal. Every tool is listed with its arguments on the developer reference.

First prompts to try

  • "Create an Estimay room called Backlog refinement with these five stories: …"
  • "Who is in room K7PQM, and who hasn't voted yet?"
  • "Read today's planning room and list each story with its agreed estimate, as a table."

Troubleshooting

  • The browser didn't open. Most clients connect lazily: start a new chat and ask for something that needs Estimay. In Claude Code, use /mcp.
  • "Open this page in your browser". You opened the consent link inside Slack, Discord or Telegram. Open it in a normal browser tab.
  • "This request has expired". The consent page waited more than ten minutes. Start connecting again from the assistant.
  • "This connection can only read rooms". You chose Read only. Disconnect it and connect again with Read & write.
  • Rooms open without you as host. You are in a different browser from the one you connected in.

Disconnecting

Open Connected assistants in the browser you connected from. It lists each assistant with its access and when it was last used. Choose Disconnect and its next request is refused. A connection unused for 30 days is removed by itself. Remove the server from the assistant's settings too.

Common questions

Does Estimay see my conversation with the assistant?

No. It only receives the tool calls the assistant makes, such as the stories to add. What a tool returns goes to the assistant and its provider.

Can I connect more than one assistant?

Yes. Each one appears separately under Connected assistants, with its own access.

Can a teammate use my connection?

No. A connection belongs to the assistant you allowed. Each teammate connects their own, as their own browser's guest.

Is there a REST API?

Not yet; the MCP server is the way to automate Estimay today. It is on our roadmap.

Ready to connect? Copy the server's address, or create a room in your browser first.
